Three Balls of Wool is a children's picture book by Henriqueta Cristina, illustrated by Yara Kono. In search of a freer place where every child can go to school, a family moves from fascist Portugal to communist Czechoslovakia. Different as this new country is, however, it is far from ideal. The family finds a different kind of oppression in the form of enforced conformity, which the mother counters with three balls of wool and lots of ingenuity by unraveling and re-knitting sweaters in bold, unique patterns, sparking real change. Published in partnership with Amnesty International, the book uses the story of a young girl to explore themes of freedom, individuality, and the strength of the human spirit, and includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the back.
